They charge the typical $10 for person to person transfers of rifles, but they charge the person receiving the guns another $25 per gun for "background check"

Is this then $10 to take in a firearm and put it on their books, then $25 to do a NICS check and transfer to the recipient?
My local guys charge $35-$50, so it seems reasonable to me.

I use Jerry's due to convenience. However don't see PJ as excessively charging.

So, the OP starts a thread with a title that is simply a false accusation and, unless you open and read the thread, all anybody sees at the top pf the forum is "Port Jeff army navy over charging".

Real nice.

You should write your State Senator about it for sure.
It is totally Port Jeff Army/Navy's fault the the SAFE Act is a total crap law in every manner shape & form.
(He said sarcastically)

Do a little search here on for threads about what a PITA the FFL has to go thorough.
It's not simply a background check.
Make a few calls and see what other FFLs charge.
I'm sure you'll fid few charge $10 and most charge more than the $35 that they do.

I thought the max charge was ten dollars according to the unsafe act?

And there's a background check for ammo, and it's prevented crimes and it's a total POS.
One of those 3 things is true. the others , not.

the $10 fee is bull. Most FFLs wouldn't even bother. They'd not do transfers.
That was probably the idea from the Nazis that enacted this law. Put a price fix so FFLs stop doing them

You've got a document and routine that's gotta be absolutely perfect. The document and related "book(s)" are subject to audit. And you've got to maintain this document for 20 years.

That's a fairly hefty burden.

I'm Chief Inspector for a FAA repair station that among other things, refills oxygen bottles for the airlines. The actual time to refill the bottle is maybe 10 minutes. Behind that, you have the nearly 200 page quality manual your shop has to abide by. The customer requirements we have to abide by. The process of checking it in. The Final Inspection. And the Federal requirements for shipping hazardous materials. The FAA and DOT hazardous materials paperwork we have to maintain a minimum of 2 to 3 years that is also subject to audit by the government. All for $35.

I feel the pain of a FFL. $10 ain't worth it.

PJ Army Navy gives great service at very fair prices. I've brought in a couple of pistols there, $25 + tax both times. Does ANYONE charge only $10? If so, it's rare, and they lose money on the deal. Jerry's $20? Kudos to both LGS. Others charge twice that or more. OP really needs to check their facts before they go off spouting nonsense - or did they gat charges a 'nuisance fee' because they made the process harder for PJAN than it had to be? Hmmmmm...... Maybe the OP deserved the $35 charge?

Benson's charged me $10. No storage fees, no tacked on fees. And they were true to their word.
My biggest complaint is having to go to PD HQ twice.
