NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — It might soon cost to pick up or drop off passengers at Newark, Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is exploring airport access fees as a way to deal with growing curbside congestion outside airport terminals.

The agency told NJ.com in an email that it is examining the fees in the wake of recent changes in passenger preferences that have altered vehicular traffic in front of terminals. There are more vehicles-for-hire, such as Uber and Lyft, using the front of the terminals as staging areas.

The Port Authority has not charged to drop off or pick up. But other airports around the country do, and car services usually pass the cost on to riders.

On Sunday, Dulles and Reagan National airports began charging a $4 access fee.

It is just a tax. There will be no change in driver's habits and passenger preferences for drop off/pick up. It is just a way to grab $ with no clear benefit for those paying the tax.

1. This is aimed at Uber, which is cutting into the fees yellow cabs pay at JFK/LGA
2. This will only cause more pay and pensions to be given to the PAPD police, first in the nation in comp and benefits

If love to just pay $4 and pull up. I'm always circling wasting gas while I wait or parking behind 10 other cars on the median waiting

It won't work that way. As someone already pointed out there will be no change in drivers habits level of congestion or the way mta employees are handling the situation. The only difference will be less money in your pocket and more in theirs.

Charge us more $$ just don't call it a tax. This is nothing but a usage tax, period.
I'm surprised they have not put credit card readers on the crapper doors yet. $1 for a #1, $2 for a #2

This really sucks. Royally! I drop off curbside all the time because it is usually older relatives who have difficulty walking, or cannot walk from the parkade. Now they are going to ding me $4 every time, stealing pieces of sheet. Next thing up know they will charge you to use WC and the air you breathe.

Would this run afoul of ADA? If dropping or picking up a handicapped passenger I don't see how they could charge a fee for that.

What official proof do I need that I'm dropping off/picking up someone with a handicap?

Not all disabilities can be seen.
