I'm sure you may have heard about the surf blaster. It's a surf casting system that works off of compressed air and can fire your bait up to 300 yards.
You can buy one online for $1,000, or you can make one yourself for about $60.

The issue i am having is how to make a bait mold that is waterproof and fits inside a 2" diameter piece of PVC.
The only place that i can find that sells them are the people that make the one that they sell, and they won't sell it to you unless you purchase the blaster from them for $1,000.

The bait mold looks like it is about 8-10 inches long, tapered at the tip. Shaped like an artillery shell. that the bait fish goes into with the hook, sinker and leader in, and then water added and then its frozen. When you are ready to use it, you pop it out of the mold. Connect it to the clip at the end of the main line off your rod, push it into the tube (barrel) pump it up to about 125 psi, hit the release valve and let it fly.

Here are two links

so if anyone has any idea how to make what is basically a bait bullet, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Very cool!

Just an idea. Walk up and down at SPP or another location with one of those and charge $10 a shot to the guys fishing. You will recoup your $1000 in a week.

Could you use a styrofoam cup? Freeze the water and then just peel the cup away when you are ready to use?

It has to fit in a 2 inch piece of pac, and has to be between 8-10" long.
It has to be tight enough in the tube to let the air push it out, but loose enough not to get stuck in the tube.

Why not cut a section of pvc tube in half length wise and use that?

Get some 1 7/8" inner diameter tubing like this

http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B00193UNBI

Line it with a plastic bag.

Fill bag with bait and freeze it.

When frozen remove from tubing and peel bag off of bait log.

Use a piece of cardboard like a piece of wadding in a shotgun shell - place it in the launcher and drop bait log on top.

Ready.
Aim.
Fire.

How about this. Get a 12" or 18" disposable plastic pastry bag. Fill with the water and slip into the same diameter
PVC pipe as the barrel of the gun. Freeze and pull bag out. I believe the pastry bag is sealed on the pointed end
(call and check it out), and with its shape your ammo will be shaped more like a bullet.

Get another length of PVC the same diameter as your cannon. Cap one end and use clay to model the tapered shape you want for the other. Fill through the clay (hole in the top). Stand vertical in freezer. When frozen, use warm water outside PVC to melt outer layer of bullet. It'll be a good fit in the cannon, but the bullet shouldn't get stuck, it's melting the minute you take it out of the freezer.

Sounds like a cool toy.

Thats what my nephew said, use 2" pvc and cap it.
You might have something there with the 1 7/8" pipe and bag.
Removing the bag would be good so as not to pollute the water.

Thanks

I'll post it here.

Hello,
just thought i would out an update in here on the surf blaster.
I got everything done, and last week picked up the compressor and motorcycle battery.
The compressor takes 2.5 minutes to pump the blast to 125 psi, which is great.
My only issues are making the bait bullets.
When i froze them in the refrigerator, my wife went ballistic on me because the refrigerator stunk like fish. lol
So now i am looking for a portable or small refrigerator freezer that i can put in the basement.

I was supposed to test fire the SB this morning, but have a head cold that is beating the hell out of me.
So I had to put to off.
Hopefully adoring the week I will be able to get out there and try it.

Good stuff. Get a chest freezer off craigslist and use it to store your projectiles and bait. put it in the garage!

High density AB foam.

I assume the sabots are one time use. Why can't you buy "replacements" from the manufacturer?

Very interesting question.
As it turns out i am the manufacturer of this one.
If you want to buy it online for $1,000, from the company that holds a copyright on the design, then they will sell you a bait mold, but only after you buy the surf blaster from them.
Believe me, I have been looking for about 3 months for anyone else that makes and sells them.

I am even considering finding a company that does injection molds and see if that is a viable solution.
I am using 2 " pvc, and the bait mold is an 8" piece of pvc, so it is reusable.
I even considered making a bait mold out of latex, but i think it's too flexible and would lose the shape of the bait bullet.

Here's what mine looks like. Here are a few pics. Of the unit, the bait mold, and what the bait comes out looking like. This bait bullet didn't have the bunker in it, but it has the rig with the steel leader and swivels.
My plan is one i get this baby fine tunes, i will be making a trip to Montauk.
The barrel (which isn't shown) is a 7 foot long piece of PVC. (which i may shorten, but i won't know if i have to until after i fire it and get a feel for what it can do.

Here's the latest update.
So far i have tested the surf blaster twice.
The first time, i found that i had an air leak where the connector meets the fire extinguisher met.
I managed to get off two shots,
One at 60 psi, which got me about 150 ft out, and the other at 90psi, which got me to about 400 ft out.
Problem was that I was using too much bait, (3/4) of a bunker) and 4 ounces of lead. Part of what i thought was that i had too too much frozen water in the mold. (but it did hold together when i fired it)

Yesterday - I made some changes that proved to be worse than better.

I got the leak issue resolved, and was getting up to 138 psi without pushing it.
Problem was that i cut back on the bait and lead, and went with a bunker chunk. ( I think that was ok, But instead of filling the 8 inch pvc tube to the top with water, I only went to 5-6 inches.
What that caused was the bait bullet to leave the barrel, go about 100-150 ft, and then shatter.

So now the plan is to stay with the bunker chunk, get the remainder of the bait fish, and grind it up to chum, and pack it in the tube and add water for the ice to (hopefully) keep everything together.

Lets see what happens.

All of this effort is going into this so i can hit the beach at Montauk and hopefully get a nice striper. :-)
It may not work as i intended, but it's pretty interesting working these bugs out. lol
