I'm curious to see who in this group has stuck it out for a week w/o any power... This would have been a tough week for my family w/o our neighbors help.

No power at the house. Never needed the generator. Gas hot water and the wood stove got me through. That and a lot of beer.

Still no power here in Syosset. I did lean on some friends for two hot showers and laundry. Otherwise, four cold showers before work each day...

Had no gen. Had no power.
When the dust settles, I'm going to be looking for a pro to install transfer switch and will be moving a generator to the top of the list of "must haves".
I'm too old and cranky for this ship.

no power / heat since Monday.

Crew (from Michigan) in my neighbors back yard today clearing trees off lines.
ME: "thank s for all your work guys.So where are you from ? I know you've been busting your Butt all week. BTW, who's paying for your lunch ? Can I ?"
THEM: "Thanks, LIPA's buys our lunch. We wouldn't accept anything anyway".
ME: "so after you finish here, you're going to clear the tress off the lines in my yard, right ?"
THEM: "No. You're not on our list. There are 6 crews in Garden City, and today each one was assigned 22 locations. Our next one is Dicks in Roosevelt Field. Listen, we know it seems logical that if we are clearing here, we should just go house to house. But this is set up by upstairs and we have to follow their program."

We did get a "big buddy heater" from Cabelas but I am paranoid running it too much since it is propane and we are running it in our bedroom

bad idea running it in the house... carbon monoxide can and will kill you.

I have the smaller version, the "Portable Buddy" (I picked it up at ACE Hardware). Catalytics are pretty indoor friendly. They mostly emit CO2 and water vapor, and only a small amount, if any, of CO. Mr. Heater catalytics also have an oxygen depletion sensor.

Just got my power back yesterday. My sister-in-law is in South Lindy, right on the bay. They're planning on not getting power back for another 2 weeks. And they refuse to leave whats left of the house. They have already had a few real cold nights.
