also:

This system does not process recertifications for New York City, Nassau County, Suffolk County or Westchester County permits. If you currently have a New York City, Nassau County, Suffolk County or Westchester County permit, you must follow the requirements that are in place in your county, rather than use this recertification system.

The licenses (not permits), for Westchester, NYC, Nassau and Suffolk are not subject to the recertification process, because they are renewable.

I know I'm living in a fantasy world but it would be great if Suffolk and Nassau got rid of their renewal process and just went with the state re-certification process. I know, I know...when pigs fly.

Actually, while upstate permits are lifetime without renewals, they have to wait considerable time, even months, for a JUDGE to approve a purchase.

Be careful what you wish for.

Well, Suffolk used to issue UP TO a 3 year license which meant a 1, 2 or 3 year license. We got them to 5 years and told them it would save money and manpower. They didn't follow (no surprise) so we illustrated that they would now have less renewal work to do as the periods between renewals would now be longer

Don't know where upstate you mean, because we usually go buy it and add it the same day.

Which upstate County will do it on the same day?
Sullivan County can take weeks if the clerk/judge is busy. Any amendment is by appointment only.

Warren. It was when things were slow and you could walk right in.

Maybe things have changed with the high volume these days, but everything I have, was done in one day.

I'll find out soon. :)

Just got my recertification letter in the mail today and was surprised to see a deadline of Jan 31, 2018.

Wondering if it matters whether if I do it now just get it out of the way or wait until the latter part of the year.

Did the county or State Police mail out the letter.

State Police.

That's good news, it will notify every lifetime Pistol License holder. The Clerk in my county said to pick up the recertification paperwork at the State Police Barracks or go online.

You don't have to recertify if you have a Suffolk County Pistol License.
