House Plans Vote on Guns Next Week
Ryan tells members package would prevent suspected terrorists from buying guns

The House will vote on a counterterrorism package that will include a provision to prevent suspected terrorists from buying guns, Speaker Paul D. Ryan told Republicans on a conference call Thursday, according to a source on the call.
The House, when it returns next week from its July Fourth recess, will also vote on a mental health bill , sponsored by Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Tim Murphy, Ryan told his House colleagues. Republicans believe terrorism and mental illness have been leading causes of most mass shootings.
[ Poll: Most Say Terror Suspects Shouldn't be Able to Buy Guns ]
Ryan's decision comes a week after Democrats disrupted House activities with a nearly 26-hour sit-in demanding action on gun control. It's unclear whether Ryan's proposal would include the broad "no fly, no buy" proposal Democrats have supported or a more limited version endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
[ Key Moments in the House Sit-In on Guns ]
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's office said Ryan may well offer the NRA-backed version, which puts the burden on the government to prove that someone on a terror watch list should not have a gun.
“House Democrats will keep up our efforts to push for the majority to allow a vote on gun violence legislation, but bringing up a bill authored by the NRA just isn’t going to cut it," said Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi.
The NRA-blessed version failed to secure enough votes in the Senate last week, but so did a Democrat-supported measure that banned sales to suspected terrorists unless they could prove they didn't belong on the watch list.

On the call, Ryan said it was common sense that suspects on terror watch lists should not be able to buy guns, but the Wisconsin Republican wants to be sure that any provision protects due process for people who may mistakenly be added to such lists.
Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer office said the Democratic caucus was looking forward to reviewing Ryan’s proposal.
"We will also be urging the Speaker to allow for an open process that provides House Democrats with a chance to file amendments and have a vote on the bipartisan 'No Fly, No Buy' bill," said Mariel Saez, a spokeswoman for Hoyer said.
With Democrats vowing to continue their protests , House GOP leaders are considering their options on how to proceed, Ryan said on the phone call.
[ Another Protest on the House Floor ]
Ryan told his colleagues that they are getting recommendations from the sergeant-at-arms and the parliamentarians, and that House Republicans will take any actions they deem necessary, according to the source on the call.

Yay! Secret lists that allow the government to strip us of our constitutional rights. Freedom is dead!

ETA- It's nice to see that Pelosi thinks the government shouldn't have to be burdened by proving that someone is guilty of anything before they take their rights away.

Well if this bill passes there will not be a secret list anymore. Just try and buy a gun or even better your not allowed to fly go buy a gun and get your day in court.

As long as there prevision to force states and state agencies to for fill their obligation to file the paper work they have been laxed in doing and a clear and expeditious way to get cleared this maybe a sensible law.

Lol. Not how it works in real life.

You'll be in court for years. Years.

Years.

You really need to put down the koolaide. Realize tyranny when you see it.

So right now if you get thrown off a plane cause your on a no fly list how do you get off the list. It can take a years to even find out why your on the list and no clear way off. If this new law brings a clear path by give you your day in court. How that drinking the koolaide at least the NRA had a hand in this bill.

Then again if you have a way to keep legal gun out of the hand of prohibited people please tell us cause the NICS system is the only one we have now so we can either fix it or let the anti use it against us.

Its a perfect way for a real terrorist to see if they are being watched. NICS goes through, they know they are still under the radar.

$10 bet it's nothing like you imagine.

Btw.... Can't believe you're ok with being put on a list without due process in the first case.

Doesn't this work two ways? What happens if I suspect Pelosi of being part of a sleeper cell that is planning an imminent attack.... Can't we just call in accusations about public officials and get them all on the No-Fly list?

Election year politics. They were praying for a crisis like Orlando, so they could splash in the warm blood of the victims for political gain.
"Due process" after the fact is NOT due process - it is an appeal. I can't believe anyone is in favor of the government using secret lists to control anything - let alone deny exercise of a Constitutional right.
Americans have become apathetic of their own rights - sad, very sad.

any politician that votes yes to this should be tried for high treason and then if found guilty should be hung from the gallows and left to rot in the sun until the vulture remove the stench of the traitor for good

You know what will happen when this occurs? The patriot will resist, maybe even take a few jackboots with him, then the media will spend the next few weeks plastering every second with stories about the right wing racist gun loving domestic terrorist and his death arsenal. The general public will be aghast, demand all guns be banned, and applaud the heroes who stopped this madman before he could shoot up a school somewhere.

Edit: Just to be clear I'm not saying to not resist, I'm just saying there is no easy way out there.
