also take a look at how the stairs are attached to the upper floor... the bottom I'm guessing is just sitting on the concrete - you don't want the entire staircase to slide out when the safe hits the top step.
That job is probably overkill - but better than being killed. 2x4's are cheap enough.
Look into the door again, the door probably has a third to half of the weight. If it comes off it makes the job no big deal at all.
Protect your floors from scraping and scuffing.

Well done. I went overkill when ours was moved into our new home two years ago. 2x4's are cheap, but like Pete said, don't overlook how the stairs are attached at the top........

The stairs are along a wall (most applications) The stringer is either nailed or screwed to the wall. It couldnt hurt to shoot a 2x4 cleat to the bottom to keep it from moving
When I was doing commercial load design, it was 125 lbs / sq-ft. That was for basic working space, not for heavy machinery, or heavy storage. Just basic minimum design.
