+1 for max. I have a few maxpedition bags and all of them are quality. They have proven themselves for years but you pay for it.

For school back packs.. anything with a lifetime warranty. Rei, ll bean, Eddie Baur all do well. My current bag is an Eastern Mountain Sports. It's held up well over the years.

I feel a lot of manufacturers these days are hit or miss... I had one pack that I actually grabbed for $15 at the grocery store.. lasted for years - until the fabric under the straps & back wore through....

replaced it 3 times in 5 years once I finally decided it was done (I had one zipper replaced, another lost the tab, but I didn't use that pocket so didn't care)

I can't remember now what the name brand one was, that lasted less than a year, another that lasted even less... I'm on one off brand now that seems to e decent fabric, but the zippers just started falling apart! just last week I was traveling, got to FL, went to open it and the slider completely fell apart! - good thing that zip was a dual slider... bad thing is the tab on the other also fell off.

I've hardly used this one.

I've got a new bag coming from NRA.... probably a 5.11 made item. we'll see.

Maxpedition are great. I have the falcon 2, its compact but holds a lot more than it looks. They came out with all new bags for 2016 so might find an old model like mine for cheap.

Vanquest also makes strong bags but are pricey too.

Updating my post regarding my 2 year old Maxpedition Condor II.
Customer service said they would replace the broken zipper at my cost and warned it could be expensive.
They said the lifetime warrantee does not cover zipper tracks or hardware. I'm thinking of replacing the pack with a
different brand. Disappointed.
Here's a shot of the damage. It's about an inch of zipper on one side.

I have a 5.11 Rush 24 and I don't really do anything crazy with it but it seems to be very well made.

I'd have to pay shipping for them to see it first. Not happening.

I did quite a bit of reading on the falcon II vs Falcon III yesterday, also looked at some YouTube reviews. People generally seem happy. I'm leaning towards the Falcon III, it looks like a great bag.

Unrelated: I figured I'd dip my toe in the Maxpedition waters and bought their Toiletry bag, I need something larger than what I have and it looked like a reasonable bag.

That sucks. It's basically the same thing that happened to my son's. Alleged lifetime warranty too, from Voodoo Tactical.

Keep in mind, I only used my pack commuting on the LIRR to work. At work it sits on the desk in my back office. My typical load being two Nalgene Oasis (GI shaped quart) canteens,
a couple of protein bars, sandwich, pair of work gloves, mini iPad and assorted other lightweight crap. I never used it as a range bag lugging boxes of shotgun ammo. For that I use an old TNF Recon pack. I also have an LL Bean day pack (2000+ cu in). I loaded that with cast iron dumbbells so I can walk stairs at home. Never a problem with either pack except they both allow rain to soak in. The Maxpedition is virtually rainproof.

I have the toiletry bag and have been using it for a long time. A good toiletry bag is underrated and this one has been great.
