Asking the question, really was that uncommon, especially if this is your first gun. The salesman might've felt a 1911 is more gun than you need, or needed to determine if it was for HD or competition. There are so many different 1911 guns, ranging in price from about $600, to over $3,0000. Models suited for HD, to those geared for competition or tactical use.

did not take long

I couldn't resist. But as you and hopefully most every other pistol owner knows, there are variations on of the 1911 (and many other pistols) that make it more suited for a specific purpose.

I'm looking for 1911 but not decided what kind.

Let me help you here,

is this your 1st 1911? if so get a ruger sr1911
are you on a budget of about $600? get a ruger sr1911
do you want a very solid, reliable and well built american made 1911 that you will like and will not break the bank? Ruger sr1911.

I have a ruger sr1911, and use that thing hard, dollar for dollar it is the best solid buy out there on a 1911, I was pleasantly shocked about that. yes, I do have 2 other 1911 both of which are higher end and the Ruger definitely compares but it does not have "the high end name"

If you need a gun shop, I will list a few local ones that I have had good experience with in suffolk if that helps

1) DSI
2)Suffolk Shooting Supply (higher priced but good guys and service close to pistol License)

I also use Kentucky Gun Company (great to deal with, un believable customer service)
Buds (I have not hade problems but others have)

Just some suggestions to get you started

By the way, WHY DO YOU NEED A 1911? LOL

OP, JMO, but you're not helping anyone, or yourself, with this kind of vague post. Put the info out there, or just let it go.

Not often, but I have been asked the purpose and never had an issue with the question.
If it had a dose of snark to it, maybe you have a reason to be pissy.
Now - if you're going to play in the LIF sandbox and drop bombs and not give all the details including the shop, you're not doing anything that is going to help anyone.

OP I agree there seems to be a vagueness in your discussion.

If someone just asked you where are you going to use the gun, that's a far cry from poor customer service or even sarcasm, and it could have just been an attempt at getting to know what your use is in order to help you narrow down a sale. I think there must be more to the experience but it seems lost in translation, you're not really detailing the perceived "offense" very well.

I mean did they even add a "pfffttt" at the end of their question? Or even a "sporto" with a snide snicker. i.e. "Where are you going to use the gun, sporto?" (snicker) :P

We've had plenty of gun shop feedback on here ranging from detailed sales transactions to dubious advice given, but "where are you going to use the gun" in a perceived sarcastic tone ranks low on the -1 thread meter.

Eh maybe the guy's intent wasn't to be sarcastic but it just came out wrong.

Was there any exchange before this?

In writing....

Where are you going to use this gun?
WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO USE THIS GUN?

It's the same question but the emotions/feeling behind it....is not. I understand that they need to ask that to narrow the choices of the buyer. As I said in very sarcastic way....as if I don't have the money to buy for it.

I'm looking for 1911 but not decided what kind.

Sorry St. James, but I'm still not getting your complaint. It is pretty vague. 1911's go from $500 to $5000+, with shooters, competition guns, carry guns, collectible guns, compact, middle, standard, long slides, different calibers, etc. Maybe a better way to word the question would be, "HOW do you plan to use it?" instead of "where". But I wouldn't be offended if they asked where - I'm just not that sensitive to gun store employee questions.
