Announcing the 2016 SAFS. If you have an interest in High Power competition, then this course will serve you well. Upon completion you will be able to safely enter and compete in any High Power match Nationwide. This will be the 27th year that we are providing this course. You will receive "hands on" instruction from volunteer competitor coaches throughout the weekend. This program is approved by the C.M.P. and you will receive a certificate from them upon completion. All lead instructors are either current or past members on the NYS Service Rifle Team and are C.M.P. Distinguished Riflemen.
Many of you are aware that for 2016, the CMP has reclassified the "Service Rifle" to now include M-4 configurations in addition to A-4 configurations. The CMP has also included the use of scopes in competitions up to 4.5 power. This particular course will still be conducted only on the AR-15 A-2 platform with as issued iron sights. The reason for this is that it is a fundamental course and we want everyone on the same exact platform for uniformity in instruction. Our host, The Peconic River Sportsman's Club has AR-15 A-2's for loan. The High Power League that I run is NRA approved. As the CMP has changed their rules for 2016, you are invited to participate in our regular League Matches after completing the course with scoped rifles if you choose to. If you do so, you are not eligible for an NRA High Power classification as the NRA still requires the use of iron sights in competition.
I have attached the registration form for your use. The course is open to the first 66 entries i receive. It usually sells out early so register ASAP.
Regards,
Ed

To all: Registration forms for the Small Arms Firing School are coming in at a brisk pace. If you want to attend, you need to get it in gear as the course is limited to the first 66 entries and we only provide this instruction once a year each April.

Interesting. Don't think I can make the event this time but sounds like something I'll do down the road.
I have Colt A2 HBAR which I swapped out the factory barrel for a heavy barrel w/o the scary flash suppressor. Is that acceptable for future events?

Can I participate with non-American service rifle with iron sights? Russian SKS for example.

You may not use that in the U.S. Service Rifle Small Arms Firing School (SAFS). However, upon completion of the course, you could fire that in our NRA matches as long as you can "sling up" with it as we fore from various positions.

I think I might sign up. I would like to use my rifle. It is a a3 or a4 setup with a 16 inch barrel. I can order a carry handle for the sights is that ok?

this course is conducted on the AR15-A2 platform. There are very good reasons for that. We have about 30 volunterr coaches that are all High Power shooters. We need to keep instruction uniform as it corresponds with our classroom presentation as this will carry over to both dry and live fire excercises. You are most welcome to use one of our rifles for this course. After you complete the course you can participate in our League Matches using any rifle ( yours) that conforms with NRA or CMP rules We continue to provide coaching and assistance as needed throughout the season as well as loaner rifles to those who may need them.
