last weekend i went to brookhaven range and during a cease fire when i took out my ear protection the guy in the next seat fired his 12 gauge. needless to say it took a day and a half for my hearing to come back and my left ear has been ringing for 6 days. does anyone know if this is temporary or something permanent?

Only time and/or a specialist can tell.

I have been very close to a weapon discharging without protection on a few occasions, and depending on the caliber and my proximity to it ringing has lasted anywhere from minutes to about a week. I get an annual medical done, and I have been getting progressively deafer every year, to the point where I wouldnt have been hired if my hearing was this bad when I first got on. I always use muffs, but am around loud tools and sirens alot, so that is most likely the culprit. When the Dr. said he was going to refer me to a specialist, I said "WHAT?" and went on my way.

Give it some time and see if it improves. If not, see someone. And I believe there may be someone on here who works in this field, he may be able to give you some advice.

True tinnitus never goes away... My best man is borderline suicidal because of it. He has bouts of vertigo and the ringing is screaming loud. It effects everyone differently. I have a very slight ringing that never goes away. I always protect my ears no matter what I'm doing now... From using the circular saw to mowing the lawn. You only have one set of ears and hearing.

Fell asleep once in the 80s leaning on a speaker in Rum Runners during a live show.
Took weeks to go away.

ETA Perhaps saying I fell asleep is misleading. I passed the F out.
Yeah, I have issues. So what.

I have one question to ask.
Last week we had pictures asking an ID on a car that were taken as I saw it from a drivers point of view. Nobody from what I saw in that thread asked, " Why the hell were you taking pictures while driving?"
So far in this thread nobody has asked, "Why the F was someone shooting during a cease fire?"

It will fade with time, give it a few weeks.

I am an engineer on a ship and hearing protection is something i wear daily. I once made the mistake of starting a 3200bhp diesel engine without hearing protection and had ringing in my ears for about 2 weeks. All the old timer guys in the marine industry all have tinnitus and are hard of hearing.. i learned my lesson and typically wear double protection now (plugs and muffs). If you are having trouble sleeping, leave a fan on in the background.

On the road or on the line that last jerkoff will wind up killing somebody.

Yup... So let's address it... OP, was this 12ga A-hole the last to fire as it went to ceasefire? Or was this a negligent discharge during an already ceasedfire?

He did say he took out his hearing protection. To me that says there was enough time.

Woke up in 2005 with ringing in my right ear. I remember saying to my girlfriend at the time, "my right ear is ringing," she said don't worry it will stop. It's now 2012, she is long gone, but, the ringing in my right ear remains. I'm lucky that's its only the right ear. it can drive you nuts. There is a product called Lipotropics that you can buy at the pharmacy at costco or at CVS on one of the vitamin shelves. It helps, its just a mixture of vitamins and if you load up now you may get lucky. You'll want to get your hands on it ASAP. There is no cure for Tinnitus, hopefully you'll get lucky and it will go away. I feel for ya and hope it goes away
Be seeing you

Had tinnitus on and off for years. Chainsaw and chipper use for nearly 30 yrs hasn't helped. Some people get over it and it goes away, some people have it permanently and some it comes and goes. Good luck with it.......

That sounds like Meniere’s disease.
My wife has it too.  It's horrible.
