I don't know. I don't recall him having any public service position, so can't really explain it. Being he was so technology oriented, they shout send out a last tweet-- IDEAD..

Not to be a smart butt here but FYI......A flag can ONLY fly half "Mast" on a ship. On land it's flown at half "Staff".
Always been some what of a flag protocol person. Not trying to step on toes.

Ok so I agree flying the flag at half mast should be reserved for heroes of State or patriots who have paid the ultimate price. That being said I don't think that I could name another who had more of an impact or who has changed the world more than Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs died. OK someone died, big F'in deal. The Apple HQ lower the flags to half staff.. Including the American flag!! Just saw it on channel 4.
Not for nothing, but that was really in bad taste. We should all aim for better. Steve Jobs will be remembered for long long after all of us are gone and forgotten.
• Only the president of the United States or the governor of the state may order the flag to be at half-staff to honor the death of a national or state figure. • In addition to the traditional half-staff salutes when proclaimed by the President, the Flag Code mentions the use of our Flag for honoring citizens who have died, especially government officials and prominent citizens. However, the Flag Code does not exclude any citizen, whether they belong to an organization or not, whether they are recognized very locally or regionally. Examples of deceased citizens that might be honored with by lowering the Flag to half-staff include local religious leaders, youth leaders, honored teachers or sports coaches, local politicians, or a local hero. There need be no authorization from the government for the private sector (non-government) to use the Flag to honor any citizen. It is important to note that the Flag Code is a code, it is intended to provide guidance and is not obligatory. It carries no civil or criminal penalties for "misuse" of the Flag. Individual are not acting illegally when using the Flag according to their own usage. Only on government / public building is the flag code required to be followed.

Really? Jobs has done more for education, and stimulating industry and the economy than any elected official in office today!
He has my respect, and my condolences to his family.
Flags at half staff in Cupertino is the very least he deserves.

Don't try and ruin OHP's rant with the fact that he's completely wrong.
This thread disgusts me. Steve Jobs has done a lot for this country, and if he own peers want to lower their flag, fine by me. To come on here and put a WTF shows literally no class.

Jack im not going to get in a peeing contest either ..but..Yes the man was a visionary,a brilliant mind and a amazing businessman but he was a businessman....and he accomplished amazing things in such a short life but Jonah Salk,Mother Teresa,Ghandi,Christian Barnard, etc these folks and many others did humanitarian things second to none.....In the end helping mankind means more than technological advances...IMHO...i respect your opinion i just dont agree with it

Still, its a misuse of Old Glory. and comparing him to all those useless 'elected officials' is practically insulting in itself, LOL.
No, it's not a misuse. and I was not comparing him to them, just pointing out that if they die, they get full honors. He built a company from scratch that has enough cash reserves to pay off the national debt they created.
