Leg. DuWayne Gregory proposed a "Gun Offender" registry bill yesterday and it passed the Legislature.

Suffolk Legislature OKs gun-crime registry

Suffolk County legislators have approved a measure to build and maintain a database of people convicted of gun-related crimes that also requires offenders to register with the county.

The legislation, sponsored by Legis. DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville), calls for a registry containing the name, photograph, residence and workplace or school location of anyone convicted of a gun crime in the county.

"This will be for law enforcement purposes and keep an eye on those who are more likely to commit gun crimes in the future," Gregory said during a midday news conference. "That's the real purpose here."

The registry, unlike the county's sex offender registry and Gregory's proposed domestic violence registry, would not be made available online to the public.

"We want those professionals to have access for information that they need," he said. "These are violent criminals. This is not something that we think would be acceptable for the public to have access to."

Gun convicts who fail to register with the county would be subject to a fine up to $1,000 and a year in prison.

Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), a co-sponsor of the legislation, said police officers should know when entering a home or business that someone convicted of a gun crime is present and for law enforcement to track such people.

"Sometimes these people with gun offenses, they can disappear," she said.

And the first comment on Newsday's site was:
"Why not have a registry for EVERYONE that commits a crime? Especially Elected Officials. ..."

Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), ...

The "Working Families" party. People see that on the ballot and they think, "Oh, how nice ... hey, I work and I have a family, ... they must be just like me".

It's the COMMUNIST party with a different name. They're REDS!!

Not that there's anything wrong with that. I mean, this is the United States of America and you can be whatever you want. It's just that some people don't have the guts to be forthright about it.

I don't need a gun.
I have never needed a gun.
I hope I never need a gun.
And, in all likelihood, I will never need a gun.
However, should I ever need a gun, I had better have a gun.
Therefore, I have a gun.

In the mean time, guns are cool. Guns are fun. Have fun and be safe.

I'm all for keeping tab's on elected officials, but run of the mill criminals?

Not to sound flip, but I think the gov't already has enough information about individuals.  It's just one more law that will be ignored by people who already could care less.

What next? Who next?

Once they start creating these kind of lists there will be no stopping them.

IMHO

This is the same person trying to shut down the Suffolk Trap and Skeet range! Anything gun related coming out her mouth is full of lies and distorted truths. If she's involved, this will be used against legitimate gunowners one way or another.

sort of OT but she knocked on my door when she was campaining...I dont live far from the range and asked  what her views on the range were..."oh. I'll do whatever I can to close it" or something real close to that....I told her I'm a hunter and a shooter and thats all I needed to know...then she was like, "wait, my husband hunts, he's from kansas(or similiar), so I understand....." CYA!

It concerns me that the 1st I am hearing of this law is after it's passed. I realize it has nothing to do with legal gun owners, but it does have to do with guns.

This legislation is a joke. All law enforcement agencies already have a database of everyone who has been convicted of ANY crime. That database can be sorted to cull gun crime convictions or anything else. This is nothing more than "look what I did for you" type legislation, while, in reality, doing nothing but spending more taxpayer money.
All the things said, about Kate Browning, would appear to be true.

And what of those with "gun related crimes" who have already committed them, served their sentence, and have gotten on with their lives? I suppose it will be a crime if they do not know they are supposed to register? Another way to drag them back into the system.

Uhh....  There IS a 'registry'.  It's called the criminal records division... How does everyone think the NICS checks are run?

and what exactly does this not-so-squeaky-clean-himself legislator say this registry will accomplish?  Other than wasting more of my tax money, and maybe giving his cousins jobs?

If it has anything to do with resticting guns or restricting gun owners rights, Kate Browning will involve herself in it.

Exactly. Not only is the Working Families Party use a nice pretty name to disguise the fact that they are Communists, there is one other item about them not many people are aware of.

The Working Families Party is the political wing of ACORN.

And who was ACORN's community organizer in chief?
