The worse part of this whole thing is to wait 6 monts, makes it ever worse when the city is taking about 12 weeks,

I wonder, what is the reason behind?

The 6 month wait probably has to do with the amount of applications being submitted.

It was said in another thread a while back....."it will never be easier or cheaper to get your license, so get it now."

That member was 100% correct, he wasn't saying it was easy or cheap, rather that NYS will only make it harder and more expensive to get.

6 months goes by pretty quickly, so like NIKE says "JUST DO IT!"

Honestly, the only reason I do not apply is that it would be less time consuming and less effort to move entirely to another state/county. Buying a house in another state for me would be less paperwork. I have no tolerance for Red Tape that's main purpose , well, is to be Red Tape.

I also have no desire to wrestle a license out of people who's main goal is to find reasons to find a way to not give it to me.

The mere idea that someone can have my license revoked and firearms confiscated with a phone call troubles me greatly.

Until such time as NYS grows up, I will advocate for better laws, but have no desire to jump through the illegal hoops.

In NY, I have college educated adults, professionals, who ask me if I am worried about "getting raided" because I own rifles. People who look at my rifles and say "You better hope the Cops don't find out." like I am the DC sniper. Fully grown adults who read somewhere that I am 42 times more likely to shoot myself than an intruder. Educated adults who think a firearm in the home is CERTAIN to kill someone.

I am not worried about not having a handgun. I am worried about everyone else worrying about my handgun.

Case and Point :A friend of mine and I, along with a few others, are sitting at TGI Fridays having appetizers and drinks. He get phone call from his boss, and they begin to argue about unpaid overtime, and my friend says "look, Ill see you Monday and we will work this out."

An hour later, he gets home and the Police are at his house. They ask him for ID and ask if he had been drinking. He says yes, and they immediately ask if he is carrying his pistol. He says "No, I am not licensed to carry." At which point they explain that his bosses WIFE was worried that he might "go ballistic" and called the Police.

Another friend of mine, very recently, had his entire collection confiscated because his sons girlfriend (a drug seeking drunkard) fell down the front steps drunk, in front of multiple witnesses, and hurt her foot, then went to the hospital and claimed she was beaten by her boyfriend because he refused to drive her there because he was drinking too. She calls the house and the boyfriends mother says "If you try to come back to this house, there will be trouble." BINGOm she calls the Cops and says she was threatened. This poor man is retired and in failing health. They took his guns "until her Order Of Protection" is up. Then this same girl begins sneaking back into the house to see her boyfriend. Long story short, she is in Riverhead now for violations of her own Order of Protection, running from the police, driving drunk, blowing two stop signs, speeding, running over a construction site, and jumping out of a moving vehicle that still had passengers. The judge raised her bail from $3500 to $7500 for her many "uncooperative" moments in Court. My friend has retained a lawyer, but has resigned his firearms to auction in his mind.

But my old retired friend was the threat.

To me, it is more hassle than it is worth.

It can be done relatively quickly. Just make sure your paperwork is in order, don't try to hide anything.

I handed in my paperwork in late October last year, fingerprinted first week of December, my Nassau County License postcard mailed out January 19 2010.

The reason for 6 months on LI, and 3 months in NYC, is simply because that's what the law allows them - otheriwse it would likely be much longer!

... Many have gotten done in 3-4 months in Nassau/Suffolk, but there's always some saying they're going on 7-8 months.

backlog?  that's just poor management - if you get 10 apps a day, you should be getting 10 licenses/denials out per day also... if you don't get them out, you get backed up more and more.  In this computerized world there's no need for it to take more than a WEEK.

WOW DOC T!

That is one heck of a read. You are correct in saying it is too easy to lose your guns, here is another example.

I knew a guy who bought several 30rd AR mags a couple years back from a rummage bin at a LOCAL gun shop.
A few of them were stamped with dates later than 09/94 and he was told since the Federal AWB was over, he was in the clear. He had them a good year or so, then him and his girlfriend got into a huge fight because she wanted to use his car that night......she calls the cops and told them he threatened her with one of his pistols. She lied because she wanted the Cops to come and scare him for her. Little does dippy know a Domestic Incident is not taken lightly by the boys at HQ.

So Suffolk County PD responds to his home, confiscates his pistols, rifles and then finds his two illegal magazines.....he was arrested and went to jail after being charged with two Class D felonies. She explained that she lied and he never threatened her and they told her that was irrelevant to her case because he was in possession of "high capacity" magazines. She was then arrested for falsifying a Police report. She plea bargained out and got a slap on the wrist and community service, but he went to jail.

What a fiasco indeed and the moral of the story: Let your girlfriend/wife drive your truck when she wants to!

I don't know if you are exaggerating for effect, but it should be pointed out that your perception of the process does not jive with the reality for many of us. No reason to scare people away from what is a relatively simple and painless process.

I would venture to say that the DMV process alone encountered when moving to another state would involve more paperwork and effort than getting a Pistol License in Suffolk County.

Fill out one form, get four friends to sign and notarize a form, go to Police HQ once for interview/fingerprints. License arrives in mail a few months later. For many of us, the process is that simple.

I know MANY Nassau and Suffolk Pistol License holders, not one of whom has ever been hassled or raided by authorities. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but I think it is the exception rather than the ruler.

While this has never happened to me, I can believe it. On the other side, most people I meet and discuss firearms with would never think of applying for a pistol license simply for the reasons you cite in your post. They (incorrectly, IMO) believe it is too much trouble to apply, the odds of getting approved are slim to none and that if approved they would be "targeted" by law enforcement.

I try to dispel these falsehoods as much as I can. More people should be encouraged to apply for a license. The more of us there are, the more commonplace firearms ownership will be. The more commonplace, then the less people will be intimidated by guns/gunowners.

Also remember that politicians looks at numbers when making policy. As the number of (responsible) license holders grows, the more impact our voice will have. You can bet that Suffolk and/or Nassau rules would be different (better) if the number of license holders were 3, 4 or 10 times what it is now.

I am a new license holder in Suffolk County. I went to Yaphank for the first time in early November, had my interview in Mid December, and received my permit in the mail the first week of April.  5 months from start to finish, and it really was very simple. Granted, I have nothing on my record, heck, not even a speeding ticket in the last 5 years. I submitted my PA license application last week and will be getting my FL this week.  Honestly, it is very simple and takes nothing more than a couple of trips down to the HQ to get it done.

Don't be discouraged by the negative post here. I could easily write equally scary stuff about you having sex with your girlfriend or applying for your learners permit.

I know many people that have had their license for 15+ years and it has not caused problems for them. There is always someone who runs into a problem but those people are in the very small minority.

The people at the Nassau pistol license section were very helpful throughout the process and I never had the feeling anyone was looking for a reason not to approve my license. The process is a bit time consuming, but none of it is difficult.

If you are a level headed person go for it.

sig, where do you get these pictures?

Definitely worth applying for a license.  The folks down at the Nassau pistol section are great people to deal with.

Not only that, learning how to shoot a pistol accurately and consistently is a challenge all unto itself.  Always worth learning a new skill.

I just reread  my post above and realized no where did I say YOU SHOULD DO IT!!!!

We need more licensed people than you know.

Like it has been said above the bigger the number the harder it is for them to push you under the rug.

Ron, great to see you posting here. I have 4 people lined up waiting to do references for me, also persuaded my wife to apply for a lisence together with me. All I need is to find a day that both my wife and I can take a day off to go there together, and this is the most difficult part.
Have you started doing handgun transfer yet?

I guess my original post was a bit negative. I should clear it up.

There are many venomous Anti-Gun people in both my family and my life, some so brainwashed they would love nothing more than to see me get denied. I moved out of my family's home because I knew it was a matter of time before someone who got angry with me would call the Police and have everything stripped from me for thier own amusment and to gladly sing the "I told you so" song. Harsh, yes. Truth, you betcha. Some of them are so anti-gun, I would not put it past them to lie to an investigator to see me denied. I have no desire to fuel their unfounded rage with my time or money. You can choose your friends in life, you can't choose your family, and you can't choose your neighbors.

I have had the Polcie called on me for the following:

Smoke from my BBQ
Smoke from my LEGAL fireplace
loud music (WBAB on 4
yelling in my own house while playing a video game
Carrying a rifle inside after a day at the range.
Sitting outside, packed and waiting for a ride to go hunting at six AM
Cleaning my rifle on the back patio
"strange vehicles" (my friends coming by for visits)

I do really need to move.

I am not saying "It is not worth it for anyone" I merely mean that is is not worth it for me. I should have been more specific.
