Thinking about purchasing one of these, does anyone have any experience with them?  Looks like a good HD shotgun.

It has an 18.5inch cylinder bore barrel. LPA sights, ghost ring rear, & M16 style optical front. Extended magazine holds 7 rounds.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Heard it's heavy as hell.  But then again... Boris the Blade aka Boris the Bullet Dodger thinks that's a good thing

I just got a moss 500....  I swear everyone of the moss tactical shotty's that I saw in several places all had a canted front sight.  All of them, it's an easy fix but weird.  Great gun though.

I know someone that had just that problem. They did correct the defect right away.

Picked one up today & put 100 rounds thru it out at Calverton.

I don't think it's heavy at all. In fact I like the feel of it, very well balanced, points really well and has great sights.

No problems at all, seems like a keeper to me.

Now, what do I do with the Mossberg pump?

Decisions, decisions.

Might have to keep em both.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

I purchased a Mossberg 930 Tactical last week and plan to take it out to Calverton to break it in.  Is there a type of ammo I should use for the break in? I have plenty of Federal 00 buck that I am planing to use. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Don't waste expensive ammo on break in. Use low brass birdshot at about $21 per 100rds.

Thank you for the input-
What size shot should I look for and how many rounds should I shoot for a break in.

Don't know how many rounds, but  7 1/8 or 8 should be ok.

Dicks has Remington Target/Game loads on sale for $3.98 / box of 20 when you buy a 20 box case (200 rounds).

Usually it's $5.98/box

Walmart has plenty of 7 1/2 shots and probably cheaper than at Dick's.

After reading this thread I ran to my safe and got my 930 out.  After a close inspection I found out my front sight was canted.  Funny I have shot two matches with it and it is now that I realize this.  I called mossberg and they told me to ship the barrel to them.  They will fix it at no cost.  I did yesterday, but it did cost me close to 30 pesos.

Honestly it was shooting better than I could shoot it with the canted front sight and all, but knowing that it was canted would probably be too distracting.

Thanks for the heads up.

Btw if you look at the competition section and look for lipsa shotfun match the fellow with the macho sombrero is shooting a 930 spx

Yeah, the 930 SPX is a great gun, reliable and (relatively) inexpensive. I have two of them and both have canted (left) front sight towers. Mossy is sending me two new barrels to replace these. It's an easy fix and LPA, who subbed the sight installation for Mossy, really messed up the first few batches of barrels. I had to jam my rear sight windage 95% to the left to mechanically zero these shotguns for using slugs. The new Mossy 930 SPX barrels now have a front sight spacer, which is how you can tell them apart from the older barrels.

As far as break-in, my fave is the Federal val-pack at Wally World, $22.97 for 100-rounds for 7.5 shot/1-1/8-oz/3-1/4-drams. This is actually pretty good ammo for the $ and I also have had good luck using this in the various shotgun steel matches. You might want to polish out the breech on that new 930 SPX to insure that the low metal rim rounds will not get hung up in the initial operation. Both of my 930 SPXs work great after about 600 rounds thru each, with no failures of any kind. Check out my new 1-point sling mount for it...really cool and impossible to find, but I have a source, so let me know if you are interested.

I really really like my 930 SPX. I have a little under 800 rounds through the gun. It runs perfectly with full power loads. I was skeptical about a mossberg manufactured semi auto gun for social work but I am not anymore.

Problem is that I am only 5'7" on a good day and the LOP was way too long. So I did my own little moding. I chopped the stock down, took a little off the return spring tube that didn't have any thing to do with the function of the gun. Then I marine tex the back of the stock to create a new buttpad. I went from a solid 14 inch LOP to just a hair under 12.25 inches. The gun handles a lot better, and recoil is more manageable because I can square myself to the gun. If I wanted to go any shorter I would have to do surgery to the recoil spring and tube, the stock is probably a half an inch away from my optimal LOP.

Best part is that if you fudge it up it's only 60 bucks to purchase any entire new stock assembly including everything from the receiver back directly from mossberg and that makes the gun brand new again.

I was just at Dick's today (Melville store), it's $619 and they had two of them. I bought two last Christmas for $550 and then $500. With over 1,000-rounds thru the pair, the Mossy 930SPX is a great and reliable autoloader for sure.

Well I sent my barrel and I was told they could not fix it, but they would replace it.  I finally got my new barrel today.  I put it into the gun and wow, everything is straight... NICE.

Senor Bob-
You might want to shoot it at 25 and 50-yards with some slugs before declaring it totally cured. I just received my 930 SPX replacement barrel last week, shot it for the first time yesterday and it still had the same problem that required the rear windage knob to be jammed almost all the way to the left to get a proper mechanical zero.  I have also shot the same matches as you last year with my 930SPX and it is gtg, as long as you have your mechanical windage set up, wherever that might be on the ghost ring sights. I will probably send the entire thing back and let them figure it out. I just picked up two new Mossy's earlier this week, a 590-A1 6-shot Mariner and a 590 9-shot Mariner...they are both a piss to shoot but the 20" 9-shot has great balance and is a real blast. I observed Simon using one at the last match at LIPSA and he did pretty well with it, faster than me with my autoloader...and the big secret? It holds 9 rounds, which is an advantage in any match, since you can reload on the run and have extra shots on target. I seem to loose too much time in between shots reloading, so the 9-shot will help. Sure, everyone starts with 5 shots at the starting line, but adding more as you transit between stations saves LOTS of time. I added Choate P/G stocks to both of these and I will definitely use the 9-shot Mariner at the next shotgun match. This one shoots perfect bulleyes with slugs at 25 and 40 yards using the gap in my add-on picatinny rail as my rear "sight" in combination with the standard front bead.

Does anyone out there know if someone makes a taller front bead sight for Mossberg shotguns??? If so, please advise, thanks.
