OK LIFers the next event should be on the official schedule soon.

the range has agreed to an April 2010 shoot and is open to any other date we want. It is imperative that we get new Instructors on Long Island. Look at the AS schedule and get signed up. You need 2 AS shoots and a 210 or better to get Instructor In Training status. Lets get moving. We have a country to save.

I'm in....and I'm sure LIF will do all it can to get as many members there as possible. We had a strong showing at this one, and I have the feeling by April we can muster up an even larger group.

Oh. . . I'm sure we can get quite a few people out at that time. It will be just a few weeks after our 1st Year Anniversary!

We should have a "Big Shindig" somewhere in honor of LIF's first year!

I'm sure we will

Definitely going, and this time, having more than 3 days notice, I'll be all prepared with a mat, sling mounted on my rifle, more mags, zeroed at 25 meters, and better ammo. Should be a big turnout from here by then. I'll try and get some friends going, I know a couple people who would be interested.

Yea, the Mosin is fun, I was more worried about everyone around me getting charred than my target, lol. Unfortunately, the muzzle blast was so powerful it was pushing the brake off, so the screws on the clamp stretched and bent, and the brake tilted downward slightly, This made the bullets graze it on the very edge of the inside, and they were getting thrown way off. Except for the first shot, they all impacted several inches below the target Will have to figure out how to fix that issue. I'll be messing with it before shooting on Wednesday trying to figure it out, the brake kinda tilts down slightly as it is, maybe adding a set screw and using good hardened steel screws will take care of it.

He didn't come at all? Now I feel bad cause now it's like you guys just paid for me instead, I'll have to make it up to you.

I'm already thinking of setting up a rifle for this Appleseed; I had wanted a Savage MkIIFV already, with a BSA Sweet .22 3-9x40 scope. Walmart has the MkIIF for $130, I could get that and with a Sweet .22 scope I can easily adjust the elevation for the 25 meters and then keep track of elevation and be easily able to return to a 50 or 100yd zero. Add the USGI sling, a few 10rnd mags, and some good ammo, and I'd be all set. Being a bolt action instead of semi doesn't bother me, if it's right on zero and functions smooth, leaving all the shooting to me, I think I'll be fine. In fact I think using a bolt would help me repeat the same cadence of breathing for each shot, and the steel 10 round mags mean no feeding and reloading issues. I had feeding issues with one of my mags Saturday and between that and struggling with the sling I had ziptied to my rifle, I didn't even get to fire a lot of the shots. This time I will be prepared.

dan, if I was you, I'd just take the brake off. it's not historical, and I really don't think it's going to help your shooting any.

I just like the brake because it really lessens the recoil, which after firing 20 rounds sitting or prone can be rather uncomfortable, and it makes the muzzle blast blow to the sides in a huge 'V' shape, which is just amusing. I was actually planning to find another M-38 that wasn't in as nice condition and put the brake and a scope on that. If I can't make it work tonight though, I'll give up and have a $15 paper weight to put on an airsoft gun or something.

And now I have to go buy a 2010 calendar so I can put the April Appleseed on it, should go add it to my phone now...

I'm sure this shoot will be a total  "Sell Out". I myself like other members of LIF just returned from the AS held in Hartford Conn. This was another great event. The Appleseed's seem to be growing in popularity rapidly. As I stated in an thread earlier April seems to be a long way off, but it will get here quick. You can register now by going to the "Sticky" about this event in The AS Forum area.

I will post an After Action Report on the Hartford shoot with photos as soon as I get a chance (Recover).

I signed up today. It'll be my first of these.
It's been a l-o-n-g time since I shot prone. Anyone have opinions on shooting mats? Cruddy old piece of carpet do as well?
If anyone has done the Appleseed before - 400 rounds! I was hoping to use my M1A, but.......... Am I going to get as much out of it showing up with a 10/22?
Thanks

I use an old blanket for a shooting mat, but a piece of carpet, yoga mat, foam sleeping pad, etc. will do the trick. I would recommend a set of tech sights for your 10/22 as a vast improvement over the stock sights plus it will duplicate the sight picture of your M1A. The 10/22 is, in my experience, the most common rifle found at Appleseed events. The fundamentals of marksmanship are the same regardless of whatever rifle you shoot. The skills that you learn with a .22 will translate to any other rifle. Pick up some extra magazines (you're going to need at least four ten-rounders, but it's nice to have an extra) and put a sling on your rifle and you will be good to go.
